One Slope Fits All

This proposal is a design method for re-envisioning the dingbat and the urban fabric it entails. To this end, it does not present a singular and unique building. Rather, One Slope Fits All exposes a method for rethinking the successes and shortcomings of this residential typology under the current circumstances. The main characteristic of the proposed Dingbat 2.0 is its accessibility to all persons without the need for motor vehicles (cars and/or elevators). For re-envisioning the dingbat typology and proposing a new Dingbat 2.0, this proposal takes into account four different scales: neighborhood, block, building, and apartment.

One Slope Fits All reevaluates the dingbat’s original design as a “minimal form of multifamily residential unit” (R. Banham). For this reason, and with the exception of kitchens and bathrooms (wet core is marked with a cross in the floor plans), rooms are not designed for specific functions: they are ‘just’ rooms. Apartments are thus capable of accepting any form of cultural and/or social organization. While keeping the same width, all of the resulting types vary in depth (10′-40′ in 10 feet increments) yielding surface areas that are equivalent to the standard studio, one bedroom, two bedroom, and three bedroom apartment sizes.
