International Seminar on Urban Form 2009

On September 5, 2009, Sergio Lopez-Pineiro presented “The Blank Meander” at the International Seminar on Urban Form in Guangzhou, China.

Despite being a mostly unrecognized type, the meander, a formal strategy that mimics a winding river’s course, has frequently been used as an urban form. My research reveals that the power of this strategy lies in the potentials of the empty areas defined by the building’s winding shape. These blank spaces, a form of tabula rasa, are readily available for appropriation. For instance, while the spaces defined by the meandering Palace of Versailles represented autocratic power, in Fourier’s Phalanstery they served as a parade-court, and in Le Corbusier’s Dom-ino housing functioned as gardens and sport grounds.

Therefore, a meandering building is not a simple zigzag of the plan: the meander must exemplify the architect’s desire for the active enclosing of collective spaces. A meandering form thus has the potential to encourage social engagement between its dwellers and performs as a horizontal formal strategy with a civic purpose. For this reason, these meander-surrounded spaces are capable of registering the predominant civic values present at the time of their conception. “The Blank Meander” analyzes these blank spaces as revelatory of the values demanded by society and used by architects at different moments in history when giving urban form to society’s dreams and needs.
